Audrey is really the first child I have had that had done the whole college acceptance/application thing. My two oldest kids went a different route, so I am literally navigating the stereotypical college acceptance game for the first time as a parent.
I figured I would throw up a quick post sort of summarizing where we are at in the process as of the middle of March 2023.
A quick summary of Audrey’s “record” first of all. Audrey currently goes to the South Carolina Governors Schools of Science and Math, which is a two year public magnet boarding school. She currently has a 4.967 something adjusted GPA and is applying to most schools without submitting SAT. Most of her classes are dual credit as opposed to AP, and she has a strong math background. On the extra-curricular side she is on the cheerleading team and in several miscellaneous clubs. She also has a summer internship in Germany working with a highly regarded computer research center.
From a personal level Audrey is a stellar student. Her mother and I haven’t helped her do homework at all during her entire life. Everything she has achieved was 100% her doing. She even applied to the Governors School herself as a 9th grader, electing to skip 10th grade. Her mother is an RN, and I am retired enlisted military, currently working as a field technician.
So… this is the colleges she applied to, in rank order and where we stand:
#3 Yale: (Computer Science) This was her top reach school. We expect a decision next week. This is one of the schools where if she gets in, it’s almost an automatic go regardless of cost. Personally, I think they are foolish if they don’t let her in after reading her admissions “Why Yale” question answer. It made me laugh.
#10 Duke (computer science). We are cautiously optimistic about Duke. She had an interview with them that went extremely well. We find out next week.
#22 Carnegie Melon (Computer Science). Audrey applied to CMU mainly because her Grandfather (who died before she was born) got his Masters Degree in Mathematics from Carnegie Melon and my mother (Audreys Grandmother also attended for a year). I was actually born in Pittsburgh while my parents were going to school here. Getting into the Computer Science program there would be very tough, but it would be nice since my office in in Pittsburgh and I would get to visit her a lot.
#38 University of Texas Austin (Computer Science). REJECTED.
#41 Boston University (Computer Science)
#44 Northeastern University (Bioengineering). ACCEPTED
#62 George Washington University (Computer Science).
#55 University of Washington. REJECTED
#62 University of Pittsburgh (Computer Science) ACCEPTED
#77 Clemson (Computer Science) ACCEPTED.
#77 Michigan State (Biosystems Engineering). ACCEPTED. Honors College. Professorial Assistantship. Lots of Scholarship Money. This is currently at the top of the list right now. She would dual major in Biosystems Engineering and Biochemistry
#105 St Louis University (Computer Science). ACCEPTED
#105 Rochester Institute of Technology. (Computer Science) ACCEPTED
#115 University of South Carolina (Computer Science). Honors College ACCEPTED. Right by her house.
#115 University of Tennessee. REJECTED
#137 Alabama (Premed) ACCEPTED
Miscellaneous other schools she was accepted into: University of Charleston. Wofford. Illinois Institute of Technology. Boise State, Instructor University (Germany)
We should be getting the final rejection/acceptance letters in the next few weeks. Once we do, we will post final results along with all the scholarship offers, degree choices and the ROI for the degree as we try and make a final decision.
Bio Engineering I would check out the starting salaries and employment rates, and the types of jobs. My wife worked with a UC Berkeley Bio graduate, and he felt gipped by his degree and the pay he got.
Computer Science is solid on the salaries.
Best of luck!
